Sunpak service

Oldest continuously-operating US patio heater manufacturer. Gas-only specialty. Restaurant industry standard since 1957.

Sunpak (Calcana Industries, Houston Texas) has been continuously manufacturing gas patio heaters since 1957, making it the oldest US patio heater brand still in operation. Restaurants used Sunpak gas heaters before the modern electric outdoor heating industry existed. Long-running gas-only specialty means deep parts catalog stability: we service Sunpak units from the 1990s and even late-1980s installations with OEM parts still available through authorized US distribution.

Common LA installations: restaurant patios across the metro (especially older establishments), residential covered patios, retail outdoor seating, hotel pool deck areas. Less prominent in luxury residential than Bromic but more prevalent in restaurant and traditional residential applications.

We service the full Sunpak lineup across LA County, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside. Black series (entry residential, 25,000 BTU). S25 (25,000 BTU with stainless or champagne housing). S34 (mid-tier 34,000 BTU). TSH (Two-Stage Heat) (premium with high/low burner switching). Natural gas and propane variants on all models.

$120 outdoor diagnostic, waived with repair. BHGS #A49573. EPA 608 Universal certified #1346255700410. BBB A+. Phones answered 24/7. Parent: patio heater repair.

Lineup and what fails

Sunpak series and common service items.

Black series, S25, S34, TSH

All four lines share core internal architecture (burner head, gas valve, thermocouple, pilot system). Differentiators are BTU output (25K, 34K, two-stage), housing material (basic black, stainless, champagne), and burner control (single-stage on Black/S25/S34, two-stage on TSH). Service approach is largely the same across all four; pricing varies modestly with housing/components.

Common service items by frequency

  • Thermocouple replacement (year 4-7, most common Sunpak failure). $220-340. We carry common Sunpak thermocouples on the truck.
  • Pilot light issues (often paired with thermocouple): pilot orifice cleaning, sometimes pilot tube replacement. Resolves with thermocouple service in most cases.
  • Gas valve diaphragm degradation (year 7-10): $480-680 valve replacement, or $200-340 seal-kit rebuild on rebuildable variants.
  • Ignition spark module (electronic ignition variants, year 6-9): $260-440.
  • Burner head corrosion (coastal LA, year 6+): $260-440 burner head, or $440-680 full burner assembly.
  • Two-stage burner switch (TSH series, year 5-8): $200-340 switch.

  6. TSH two-stage burner switch. $200-340.

Real repairs

Composite stories from the route.

West Hollywood restaurant patio, Sunpak S34 (commercial), 6 years old

Pilot wouldn't stay lit. Diagnosed: thermocouple weakened from continuous-cycle commercial duty (year 6 commercial-equivalent for residential year 4-7 timing). Replaced thermocouple, cleaned pilot orifice. Total: $120 plus $260 thermocouple plus $80 pilot service = $460.

Pacific Palisades residential covered patio, Sunpak S25 stainless, 9 years old

Slow ignition response and yellow flames at burner. Diagnosed: gas valve diaphragm degradation, paired with pilot orifice partial blockage. Replaced gas valve, cleaned pilot orifice. Total: $120 plus $580 gas valve plus $80 pilot service = $780.

Manhattan Beach beach-area patio, Sunpak Black series, 7 years old

Burner head significant corrosion from coastal marine layer exposure. Replaced full burner assembly (head plus venturi). Total: $120 plus $540 burner assembly plus $200 install = $860.

Pasadena residential, Sunpak TSH 1995-vintage installation

Year 30 unit (yes, 30 years old). Thermocouple plus two-stage switch plus pilot orifice cleaning. Multi-component preventive service rather than waiting for next failure. Total: $120 plus $280 thermocouple plus $260 switch plus $80 pilot = $740. Owner happy to keep an old unit running with cumulative service.

Honest scope

What we do for Sunpak, and what we don't.

We service:

  • Black series (entry residential 25,000 BTU)
  • S25 (25,000 BTU stainless/champagne housing)
  • S34 (mid-tier 34,000 BTU)
  • TSH (Two-Stage Heat premium, high/low switching)
  • Natural gas and propane variants
  • Wall mount and ceiling mount installations
  • Thermocouple, gas valve, pilot system, burner head, ignition module
  • Vintage units from 1990s and late-1980s with OEM parts
  • Restaurant commercial and residential installations

We don't do: new Sunpak installation (gas line plumbing requires plumber trade, structural mounting sometimes engineer involvement); gas line upsizing for higher-BTU upgrades (plumber trade); custom propane tank routing (LP gas trade); stucco or wall repair from old mounting hardware removal (carpenter or stucco trade).

Pricing

Sunpak repair costs.

FAQ

Sunpak repair questions.

Sunpak is the oldest US patio heater brand?

Yes. Sunpak (Calcana Industries, Houston Texas) has been continuously manufacturing residential and commercial gas patio heaters since 1957, making it the oldest continuously-operating US patio heater manufacturer. Pre-dates the entire modern outdoor-heating industry. Long-running gas-only specialty (no electric variants) means deep parts catalog stability and field-serviceability that newer electric-focused brands don't always match. Restaurants and residential installations from the 1980s and 1990s are still serviceable today with OEM parts.

Pilot light won't stay lit on my Sunpak. What's wrong?

Thermocouple failure, almost always at year 4-7. The thermocouple is the safety device that holds the gas valve open as long as it senses pilot flame heat. When it weakens, the valve closes back, pilot extinguishes, you can't light it again until thermocouple is replaced. Replacement runs $220 to $340 typical. We carry Sunpak thermocouples on the truck because this is the most common Sunpak service item. Sometimes paired with pilot-orifice cleaning if partial blockage is preventing proper flame.

Black series vs S25 vs S34. What's the difference?

Black series is the entry residential tier (25,000 BTU, basic black housing). S25 is also 25,000 BTU but with stainless or champagne housing options. S34 is mid-tier 34,000 BTU for larger residential or light commercial coverage. TSH (Two-Stage Heat) is the premium variant with high/low burner switching, lets you run lower BTU for ambient warming or full BTU for cold weather. All four use similar internal architecture (burner head, gas valve, thermocouple, pilot system); housing and BTU output are the differentiators.

Gas valve diaphragm degradation - what does that look like?

Year 7-10 typical pattern. Symptoms: slow ignition response (seconds longer than usual to light pilot), uneven flame at the burner (some flames yellow instead of crisp blue), or gas pressure regulation drift (heater runs but BTU output feels reduced). Multimeter and manometer test the gas valve and confirm. Full gas valve replacement runs $480 to $680 including the valve and labor. Some valves can be rebuilt with a seal kit ($200 to $340) instead, depending on the specific model and condition.

Burner head corrosion on coastal install. Repair scope?

Coastal LA installations (Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, Marina del Rey, Pacific Palisades, parts of Malibu) see accelerated burner head corrosion at year 6+. The burner head is a stainless or aluminum casting with precisely-machined gas ports; corrosion eats into the port edges and degrades flame quality. Replacement burner head runs $260 to $440 part plus install. Sometimes the entire burner assembly (head plus venturi) is replaced together, $440 to $680.

Do you service old Sunpak units from the 1990s?

Yes. Sunpak's parts catalog stability means we can service units from the 1990s (and even some 1980s installations still in operation). Common service items (thermocouple, gas valve, pilot orifice, burner head) are still available through Sunpak's authorized US distribution. Older units often need cumulative service rather than single repair: thermocouple, gas valve, burner head, igniter all reaching end-of-life simultaneously. We do the math on whether multi-component repair pencils out vs replacement on a case-by-case basis.

What's your warranty?

90 days SDAR labor and parts warranty on the work we perform. Sunpak component warranties (gas valve, thermocouple, burner) where applicable processed separately. BHGS #A49573, BBB A+ accredited, EPA 608 Universal certified #1346255700410.
