Frigidaire Freezer Not Freezing? Coils, Defrost, or Board

A Frigidaire that won't stay frozen is usually dirty coils, the defrost system, or the control board — and on a chest freezer or a garage unit, two things fool people first. Here's what to check.

01 · The short answer

A no-freeze Frigidaire is coils, defrost, the board — or a false alarm.

When a Frigidaire freezer runs but won't stay frozen, the causes are dirty condenser coils, a defrost system iced over, a failed evaporator fan, a bad start relay, the control board, or a sealed-system/compressor fault. A freezer should hold about 0°F. Two Frigidaire-specific things trip people up first: on frost-free models the electronic control board is a known weak point that can mimic other faults, and on the standalone chest and upright deep-freezers Frigidaire is known for, a cold garage or (on a manual-defrost chest) normal frost buildup can look like a failure when nothing's broken. So rule out the easy stuff — coils, seal, ambient temperature, a manual defrost — then it's the mechanical causes. Coils and seal are homeowner-safe; defrost, fan, board, and sealed system are a tech job. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with repair.

Keep the door shut while you wait. Per USDA guidance, a full freezer holds a safe temperature about 48 hours (24 hours if half-full) if the door stays closed — so a not-freezing Frigidaire is worth a same-day call before food is at risk.

02 · Two Frigidaire things to rule out first

The control board, and the standalone-freezer false alarms.

The control board. On frost-free Frigidaire units the electronic control board is a documented weak point, and a failing board causes not-freezing in ways that mimic other parts — it can stop running the defrost cycle (frost builds, airflow blocks), misread the temperature, or not cycle the compressor right. That's why we test the board rather than guess: swapping a fan or sensor won't fix a freezer whose board isn't commanding the cooling. It's the same pattern we cover on our Frigidaire refrigerator not cooling page.

The standalone false alarms. Frigidaire is big in chest and upright deep-freezers, and two of those look like faults but aren't: a manual-defrost chest freezer is supposed to accumulate frost — defrost it fully before assuming it's broken — and a freezer in an unconditioned garage can be affected by extreme ambient temperature if it isn't a garage-ready model. Rule both out before paying for a repair.

03 · Why a Frigidaire freezer won't freeze

The causes, in the order our techs check them.

Dirty condenser coils (check first)

Coils caked in dust can't shed heat, so the freezer slowly loses its ability to hold 0°F. The most common homeowner-fixable cause, and worse in an LA summer.

Control board (frost-free models)

A documented Frigidaire weak point. A failing board can stop defrost, misread temperature, or mis-cycle the compressor — mimicking several faults. We test it rather than guess.

Defrost system iced over

A failed defrost heater, sensor, or control lets frost build on the evaporator until air can't pass. A thick, returning frost sheet on the back panel is the tell. Tech repair.

Evaporator fan

Circulates cold air over the coil. If it fails or frost jams it, the freezer warms though the compressor runs. Tech repair.

Start relay / sealed system

If the compressor won't start or runs without cooling, the relay or the sealed system is the fault — the higher-ticket end. A gauges-and-tech diagnosis.

04 · What you can safely check

Try these before the food is at risk.

  1. Vacuum the condenser coils behind the rear or under a front kick-plate. This alone fixes a lot of gradual not-freezing cases.
  2. Check the door or lid seal closes fully and nothing's holding it ajar.
  3. On a manual-defrost chest freezer, do a full defrost if frost has built up thick — that's normal maintenance, not a repair.
  4. Consider the location — if it's in a hot or very cold garage and isn't a garage-ready model, ambient temperature may be a factor.

Where to stop: coils, seal, a manual defrost, and checking the location are safe. The control board, defrost parts, evaporator/condenser fan, start relay, and sealed system carry shock and refrigerant risks — our techs' work.

05 · Chest, upright, or the freezer side of a fridge

Same diagnosis, whichever Frigidaire you have.

The causes are the same whether it's a Frigidaire chest freezer, an upright, or the freezer compartment of a Frigidaire refrigerator — coils, defrost, fan, board, and compressor work the same way (a manual-defrost chest just adds the defrost-it-first step). The same not-freezing fault on another brand: LG freezer not freezing, or the general freezer not freezing guide. If it's your fridge and the freezer's fine but the fresh-food side is warm, see fridge not cooling, freezer works.

06 · When to call us

Coils clean, defrosted, still not freezing?

When the coils are clean, the seal's good, a manual-defrost unit has been defrosted, and location isn't the issue but the Frigidaire still won't hold 0°F, the fault is inside — the control board, the defrost system, the evaporator fan, the start relay, or the sealed system. Because the board is a known Frigidaire weak point, our techs test it rather than swap parts by guess, and carry the common Frigidaire defrost parts and fan motors for a one-visit fix where possible.

More help: the general freezer not freezing guide, freezer ice buildup if it's mostly frost, the Frigidaire board pattern on Frigidaire refrigerator not cooling, and the sibling LG not freezing. 07 · FAQ

Frigidaire freezer not freezing: common questions.

Why is my Frigidaire freezer not freezing?

On a Frigidaire freezer that runs but won't stay frozen, the usual causes are dirty condenser coils, a defrost system iced over the evaporator, a failed evaporator fan, a bad start relay, the control board, or a sealed-system/compressor fault. A freezer should hold about 0°F; when it drifts warmer and food softens, one of those is why. Frigidaire builds a lot of standalone chest and upright deep-freezers, and two Frigidaire-specific things matter: the electronic control board is a known weak point on the frost-free models, and a garage-kept freezer can be fooled by a cold ambient temperature. Cleaning coils and checking the door seal are homeowner-safe; the defrost parts, fan, board, and sealed system are a tech job. $89 residential diagnostic, waived with repair.

My Frigidaire freezer is in the garage — could that be why it won't freeze?

Possibly, and it's worth ruling out before assuming a fault. A standard freezer's thermostat senses the freezer's internal temperature, but the compressor's behavior is also affected by the surrounding air. In a very cold garage (an unusually cold LA night, or a cold-storage space), some freezers can under-run the compressor and let the interior drift up — and in a very hot garage in summer, the compressor struggles to shed heat and can't keep up. If yours isn't a garage-ready model, extreme ambient temperatures can genuinely affect freezing. Frigidaire sells 'garage-ready' units built for this; if yours isn't one and it's in an unconditioned garage, that may be part of the story alongside anything mechanical.

My Frigidaire is a chest freezer with frost buildup — is it broken?

Probably not — most chest freezers are manual-defrost, and frost buildup on the walls is normal for them, not a fault. A manual-defrost chest freezer is designed to accumulate frost over time, and you're meant to empty it and defrost it periodically (every so many months, or when the frost gets thick). Heavy frost can eventually insulate the walls and hurt performance, which reads as 'not freezing as well.' So if it's a manual-defrost chest unit, try a full manual defrost first. If it won't hold temperature even after defrosting, or it's a frost-free upright building frost it shouldn't, then it's a real fault — often the defrost system or the control board.

Is the control board a common Frigidaire freezer problem?

Yes — on frost-free Frigidaire units the electronic control board is a documented weak point, and it can cause not-freezing in ways that mimic other parts. A failing board can stop running the defrost cycle (so frost builds and blocks airflow), misread the temperature, or not cycle the compressor correctly, so the symptoms look like a defrost, sensor, or compressor problem when the board is the root cause. That's exactly why we test the board rather than swap parts by guess — replacing a fan or a sensor won't fix a freezer whose board isn't commanding the cooling correctly. It's the same control-board pattern we cover on our Frigidaire refrigerator not cooling page.

Can I fix a Frigidaire freezer that won't freeze myself?

Some first steps, yes. Vacuum the condenser coils, make sure the door or lid seals fully, confirm the temperature setting and that interior vents aren't blocked, and — on a manual-defrost chest freezer — do a full defrost if frost has built up thick. If it's in a garage, consider whether extreme ambient temperature is a factor. Those handle a fair share of cases. What to leave to a tech: the defrost heater/sensor/control, the evaporator or condenser fan, the start relay, the control board, and anything in the sealed system or compressor. Those carry shock and refrigerant risks. If it stays warm after a coil clean and a good seal, it's a service call.
