Frigidaire Freezer Not Freezing? Coils, Defrost, or Board

02 · Two Frigidaire things to rule out first
The control board, and the standalone-freezer false alarms.
The control board. On frost-free Frigidaire units the electronic control board is a documented weak point, and a failing board causes not-freezing in ways that mimic other parts — it can stop running the defrost cycle (frost builds, airflow blocks), misread the temperature, or not cycle the compressor right. That's why we test the board rather than guess: swapping a fan or sensor won't fix a freezer whose board isn't commanding the cooling. The standalone false alarms. Frigidaire is big in chest and upright deep-freezers, and two of those look like faults but aren't: a manual-defrost chest freezer is supposed to accumulate frost — defrost it fully before assuming it's broken — and a freezer in an unconditioned garage can be affected by extreme ambient temperature if it isn't a garage-ready model. Rule both out before paying for a repair.
03 · Why a Frigidaire freezer won't freeze
The causes, in the order our techs check them.
Dirty condenser coils (check first)
Coils caked in dust can't shed heat, so the freezer slowly loses its ability to hold 0°F. The most common homeowner-fixable cause, and worse in an LA summer.
Control board (frost-free models)
A documented Frigidaire weak point. A failing board can stop defrost, misread temperature, or mis-cycle the compressor — mimicking several faults. We test it rather than guess.
Defrost system iced over
A failed defrost heater, sensor, or control lets frost build on the evaporator until air can't pass. A thick, returning frost sheet on the back panel is the tell. Tech repair.
Evaporator fan
Circulates cold air over the coil. If it fails or frost jams it, the freezer warms though the compressor runs. Tech repair.
Start relay / sealed system
If the compressor won't start or runs without cooling, the relay or the sealed system is the fault — the higher-ticket end. A gauges-and-tech diagnosis.
04 · What you can safely check
Try these before the food is at risk.
- Vacuum the condenser coils behind the rear or under a front kick-plate. This alone fixes a lot of gradual not-freezing cases.
- Check the door or lid seal closes fully and nothing's holding it ajar.
- On a manual-defrost chest freezer, do a full defrost if frost has built up thick — that's normal maintenance, not a repair.
- Consider the location — if it's in a hot or very cold garage and isn't a garage-ready model, ambient temperature may be a factor.

05 · Chest, upright, or the freezer side of a fridge

When the coils are clean, the seal's good, a manual-defrost unit has been defrosted, and location isn't the issue but the Frigidaire still won't hold 0°F, the fault is inside — the control board, the defrost system, the evaporator fan, the start relay, or the sealed system. My Frigidaire freezer is in the garage — could that be why it won't freeze?
Possibly, and it's worth ruling out before assuming a fault. A standard freezer's thermostat senses the freezer's internal temperature, but the compressor's behavior is also affected by the surrounding air. In a very cold garage (an unusually cold LA night, or a cold-storage space), some freezers can under-run the compressor and let the interior drift up — and in a very hot garage in summer, the compressor struggles to shed heat and can't keep up. If yours isn't a garage-ready model, extreme ambient temperatures can genuinely affect freezing. Frigidaire sells 'garage-ready' units built for this; if yours isn't one and it's in an unconditioned garage, that may be part of the story alongside anything mechanical.
My Frigidaire is a chest freezer with frost buildup — is it broken?
Probably not — most chest freezers are manual-defrost, and frost buildup on the walls is normal for them, not a fault. A manual-defrost chest freezer is designed to accumulate frost over time, and you're meant to empty it and defrost it periodically (every so many months, or when the frost gets thick). Heavy frost can eventually insulate the walls and hurt performance, which reads as 'not freezing as well.' So if it's a manual-defrost chest unit, try a full manual defrost first. If it won't hold temperature even after defrosting, or it's a frost-free upright building frost it shouldn't, then it's a real fault — often the defrost system or the control board.
