Traeger service
Mainstream pellet smoker leader, dominant across LA backyard residential.
Traeger Grills is the American pellet smoker manufacturer founded in 1985 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Acquired by Apollo Global Management in 2017, public IPO 2021. Over the past decade Traeger has become the dominant pellet brand in LA backyard residential, suburban entertainment patios, and a meaningful share of small commercial BBQ operations across the LA basin and the Inland Empire. Three live product lines drive the catalog: Pro Series (entry tier, $600-1,200), Ironwood (mid tier, $1,200-2,200), Timberline (premium tier, $2,200-3,800). The Pellet Boss controller and WiFIRE app integration appear on Pro Plus, Ironwood, and Timberline current models.
We service the full Traeger lineup across LA County, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside. Pro Series (Pro 22, Pro 575, Pro 780). Ironwood (650, 885). Timberline (850, 1300, XL). Plus the older pre-WiFIRE controllers on legacy units (Pro 22 D2, Junior Elite, Tailgater).
$120 outdoor diagnostic, waived with repair. BHGS #A49573. EPA 608 Universal certified #1346255700410. BBB A+. Phones answered 24/7. Parent: smoker repair.
Lineup and what fails
Traeger series and common service items.
Pro Series (entry tier, $600-1,200)
Pro 22, Pro 575, Pro 780. Most common Traeger we service. Hot rod igniter year 3-5 ($260-380 all-in). Auger motor year 5-8 if the unit sees heavy weekly use. WiFIRE control board on Pro Plus year 6-9 ($480-720). Hopper rust on coastal addresses regardless of year. At year 9-10 with control board failure, the math typically pushes toward replacement on this tier.
Ironwood (mid tier, $1,200-2,200)
Ironwood 650, Ironwood 885. Heavier-duty fan motor and auger than Pro Series. Hot rod igniter same wear pattern (year 3-5). Pellet Boss controller with WiFIRE: year 6-9 typical replacement window ($480-720 all-in). Double-wall insulated cabinet means more consistent low-and-slow temps but doesn't extend the electromechanical wear-side timeline. Year 10-13 lifespan with ongoing repair.
Timberline (premium tier, $2,200-3,800)
Timberline 850, Timberline 1300, Timberline XL. Triple-wall insulation, induction motor on the fan (longer life than the Pro Series brushed motor), more capable RTD probe pair. Hot rod igniter still year 3-5. Control board year 7-10. Lifespan with ongoing repair: year 12-16. We've serviced Timberlines on their second igniter and second control board still cooking well at year 12.
Legacy and pre-WiFIRE
Older Pro 22 D2, Junior Elite, Tailgater, and other pre-WiFIRE units use the Pro D2 controller (no WiFi). Same hot rod, fan, auger, RTD as the Pro Series modern units. Repair-justified through year 8-10 typically. Some parts harder to source on units 10+ years old; we confirm availability at the diagnostic before quoting parts.
Common scenarios
Top Traeger repairs in our 5-county territory.
- Hot rod igniter failure (year 3-5). Element open circuit; smoker won't ignite. $260-380 all-in.
- Auger pellet jam. Pellet bridging from poor-quality or moisture-saturated pellets; often clearable for diagnostic only. We educate the customer on pellet quality at the same visit.
- Induction fan motor (year 5-8). Bearing wear, eventual failure; firepot pellets smolder without catching properly. $340-520 all-in.
- WiFIRE control board (year 6-9). WiFi module failure or full board failure on Pro Plus, Ironwood, Timberline. $480-720 all-in.
- RTD probe drift. Inaccurate cabinet temps causing inconsistent cooks. Test against reference; replace if drifted more than 15°F. $240-360 typical.
- Coastal hopper rust. Manhattan Beach, Marina del Rey, Malibu, Hermosa Beach. Surface rust we sand and recoat; severe rust requires hopper replacement.
- Auger motor seizure (year 5-8 on heavy use). Motor or gear-train failure. $340-620 typical.
Real repairs
Composite stories from the route.
Manhattan Beach, Traeger Pro 575 (2021 install, year 4)
Owner called: smoker won't ignite. Hot rod igniter open circuit (accelerated wear in marine layer environment). Replaced igniter; while there, caught early hopper rust at the auger inlet, sanded and recoated, advised owner on covered storage. Total: $120 plus $120 part plus 25 minutes labor = $300.
Calabasas, Traeger Ironwood 885 (2018 install, year 7)
Owner reported app disconnection plus erratic temperatures. Diagnosed: WiFIRE control board failing. Replaced board, re-paired app, ran 4-hour cabinet test. Total: $120 plus $440 part plus 75 minutes labor = $640.
Newport Beach, Traeger Ironwood 650 (2020 install, year 5)
Auger pellet jam. Cleared the bridged pellets, vacuumed the firepot, ran ignition test successfully. Customer had been buying bagged pellets from a hardware store with unknown storage. Recommended a CookinPellets or Lumber Jack distributor in OC. Total: $120 diagnostic plus 30 minutes labor = $200. No parts.
Pasadena, Traeger Pro Series 22 fleet (commercial pop-up BBQ)
4 units on quarterly PM. Year 2 commercial duty equals year 8-10 residential. Replaced 2 igniters and 1 fan motor across the fleet during the visit. Total: $480 (4 diagnostics) plus $620 parts plus 3.5 hours labor = $1,440. Customer's previous shop had been quoting unit replacements at $700 each.
Honest scope
What we do for Traeger, and what we don't.
We service:
- All current Traeger lines: Pro Series, Ironwood, Timberline (with or without WiFIRE)
- Legacy Traegers: Pro 22 D2, Junior Elite, Tailgater, pre-WiFIRE D2 controller models
- WiFIRE app pairing and connectivity diagnostics
- Hot rod igniter, auger motor, induction fan, RTD probe pair, control board service
- Coastal hopper rust repair (surface treatment; full replacement when warranted)
- Commercial pellet smoker fleet PM (BBQ pop-ups, catering kitchens, restaurants)
We don't do: new electrical infrastructure (Traegers run on a standard 120V 15-amp circuit; if you don't have one near the install location, that's an electrician's job); custom controller installations (Smoke Daddy, Ortech, third-party controllers); cabinetry modifications. If you have a Traeger over 12 years old with a control board failure, we'll usually tell you the math: a current Pro 575 is $700, your repair will run $480-720, and the new model has better firmware, better probes, and a more reliable WiFi stack.

Why us for Traeger
What separates our Traeger service.
- WiFIRE app and Pellet Boss controller expertise. Many LA appliance shops don't service smoker electronics at all.
- Marine layer hopper rust expertise. Manhattan Beach, Marina del Rey, Malibu, Newport Beach: we stock high-temp coatings and replacement hopper assemblies for the major Pro Series and Ironwood models.
- Parts on the van. Hot rod igniters for Pro Series, Ironwood, Timberline; common RTD probes; common fan motors.
- Commercial fleet PM. BBQ pop-ups, catering kitchens, restaurant patio Traegers on quarterly preventive maintenance schedule.
- Pellet quality consultation. Sometimes the 'service call' is a pellet quality conversation, not a parts replacement. We tell you that on the diagnostic.
- BHGS #A49573 plus EPA 608 Universal certified #1346255700410. Verifiable with the state.
- Same-day across LA, OC, Ventura. Next-day for Riverside and San Bernardino. 24/7 phone.

FAQ
Traeger repair questions.
How long does a Traeger pellet smoker last in LA?
Pro Series (entry $600-1,200): year 7-10 with ongoing repair, after which control board failures push the math toward replacement. Ironwood (mid $1,200-2,200): year 10-13 with repair. Timberline (premium $2,200-3,800): year 12-16 with repair. Coastal addresses (Manhattan Beach, Marina del Rey, Malibu) compress those numbers by 2-3 years if the hopper isn't kept covered between cooks. We see hopper rust as the additional service item on every coastal Traeger we touch.
My Traeger won't ignite. What's the most likely cause?
Year 3-5: hot rod igniter element ($80-140 part, $260-380 all-in). The igniter glows red on startup to ignite the first pellets in the firepot, and it's a consumable wear part. Year 6-9: control board WiFIRE module if the panel shows the 'fire timeout' error code. Year 5-8: induction fan motor if the firepot pellets are smoldering but not catching. We diagnose with the panel codes plus a continuity test on the igniter element. About 60% of 'won't ignite' calls resolve at the diagnostic with igniter replacement.
What's WiFIRE and what fails on it?
WiFIRE is Traeger's app integration system, running on the Pellet Boss controller in Pro Plus, Ironwood, and Timberline current models. The WiFi module on the control board can fail independently of the rest of the controller, but more often the entire board needs replacement together ($340-540 for the part, $480-720 all-in). Common failure window is year 6-9. Symptoms: app pairing issues, intermittent disconnection, drift in app-reported temperature vs panel-displayed temperature, complete WiFi loss with panel still functional.
Why is my Traeger temperature swinging 50°F?
RTD probe drift is the leading cause. The RTD measures cabinet temperature and feeds the control board, which modulates auger feed rate and fan speed accordingly. Probes drift over time, especially after grease soak from many cooks. We test against a known reference; if drift exceeds 15°F we replace ($240-360 typical). Secondary causes: pellet quality (wet or low-grade pellets feed inconsistently), fire pot ash buildup (fan can't push enough air through), induction fan bearing wear (degraded airflow at high settings).
Do you fix Traeger hopper rust on coastal Traegers?
Yes. Coastal Traeger installs in Manhattan Beach, Marina del Rey, Malibu, Hermosa Beach, and Pacific Palisades develop rust at the auger inlet and around the hopper lid pivot when not kept covered between cooks. Surface rust we sand and coat with high-temp paint at a service call. Severe rust (auger inlet pitting that affects pellet feed) requires hopper replacement on Pro Series and Ironwood (Pro $200-340 part; Ironwood $340-520; Timberline hopper assembly is integrated and runs higher). We recommend a fitted Traeger cover plus storage in a covered patio area on coastal residences.
What's the warranty on Traeger repairs?
90 days SDAR labor and parts warranty on the work we perform. Traeger component warranties (igniters, control boards, RTD probes) where applicable are processed separately through Traeger's authorized service network — we coordinate when the failure is within Traeger's warranty window. BHGS #A49573, BBB A+, EPA 608 Universal certified #1346255700410.
